Happy Father’s Day
I don’t know when I took my first step
But I do remember you were by my side
Goading me to move ahead
Looking on with joy and pride
Forever running to school I was,
Praying to God, “Can’t be late today”
And then look up to you, my hero
And your faithful scooter, to save the day
No matter what I wanted,
You just smiled, never said a no
But silently taught me what’s right
And what demands I should let go
A top draw athlete when young,
You’re still fitter than I am
All the years of running for the daily bread
Has not dulled your spirit of “I can”
I was always a rebellious child,
Ignore your advice, your anger I’d despise
All the years of pain and growing up though,
Hopefully have made me a bit more wise
I’m now a father of two,
A challenge I relish with joy
As I fondly remember how you dealt with me,
And your virtues I imbibe
A father’s heart is like a coconut
The hard exterior masks the tender core
But pierce it and you will only get sweet nectar
And the cool, satisfying feeling coming to the fore
I may grow up to be whatever to the world,
But dad, I’m still your naughty little child
Making mistakes a plenty each day,
Trying to curb my instincts gone wild
Striving each day, to bring that smile on your face
Searching for the words “Well Done”
Ever conscious that my own role as a father,
Has only just begun!
My mentor, my friend, my mirror, my guide
My hero you remain to this day…
And how I wish I could be the same to my kids
And beam with joy when they wish me “Happy Father’s Day”!
