At 36,000 feet, on a high…
“Good morning sir, welcome on board”
She just said it a thousandth time today
Forcing a fake but reassuring smile on her face
The real one neatly tucked away
She had a red eye flight, barely caught a wink
And was now back on an early morning flight
Into her thoughts, deeper she’d sink
As the plane caught dizzying height
Hundreds of passengers every day she greets
Once in a while someone interesting she meets
The beautiful belle though is hard to impress
And her real feelings hard to express
Time for the in-flight demonstrations, here she goes
As everyone’s watching her, rather than the procedure
When tragedy comes, they’ll all be clueless, she knows
It’ll be a hundred in distress, her the only saviour
A trained first aider, prepared for any emergency
Hoping though, that side of her you don’t get to see
“We have another delayed departure, hard to kill time”
She smiles to herself, reflecting on a secret learnt with time
So much buffer has been built in by the airline
That they’ll still reach ahead of time
As the flight takes off, she takes a brief respite
Chatting happily around, but feeling vulnerable inside
Every time they take off, she silently says her prayers
And then gets about her work, her fears set aside
Time for breakfast to be served, the trolley is out
It’s a short flight, she’s rushing her job, too much to do
In all these years of flying to everywhere,
No one’s ever asked her, “Aren’t you hungry too?”
Weird sleeping & eating patterns, may have left her weak inside
But the calm, confident exterior just takes all this in its stride
She chose this career, knowing very well the perils it brings
But then big dreams have never cared about the little things!
She wanted to be independent from an early age,
Wanted to travel the world, move out of her home
Now has an interesting career, lots of money, travels galore
The only thing she misses most, is home sweet home
A thrill she seeks, every time they fly!
A sweet rush of pure, pure joy…
Cheers! To our charming airhostess…
At 36,000 feet, on a high!
Thanks to the charming Spice Jet air hostesses from my last trip who both inspired this piece and also contributed with their inputs to make it happen.
